Challengers Syöte
The Ski Classics Challengers event ‘We are the Ski Family Syöte’ starts in one week. The 40km classic roller ski race will take place on July 8 in Taivalkoski, Finland.

‘We are the Ski Family Syöte’, a Ski Classics Challengers event, will celebrate its first edition on July 8, 2023. The event is a long-distance roller skiing race in classic technique in Finland.

The event in Syöte brings together many Finnish ski families, and the organizers are surprised with the positive feedback on the first-ever event.

“Our purpose is to bring added value and bring athletes of all ages together,” states Heikki Korpela, one of the event’s organizers, and adds:

“We want to be something for everyone, from you people to adults. We consider youth skiing to be significant. Finland has a place for discussion on how to make skiing more attractive.”

In connection with the event, there will be a seminar where Geir Endre Rogn and Arild Monsen will speak remotely. Geir will talk about the Norwegian athlete’s path, and Arild, coach of the Norwegian national sprint team, will talk about the sprint national team’s training. Teemu Pasanen is also taking part remotely to discuss what to learn from Norway.

The event continues with a training camp, where skiers of all ages are welcome. Korpela is responsible for coaching and sharing the knowledge he learned in Norway with young skiers.

Matti Tyni from Taivalkoski Metsäveikkoin, organizer of the event, is excited by the participants at the Ski Classics Challengers competition.

Some solid names are already registered for the roller ski race: Remi Lindholm, Lauri Mannila, Miro Karppanen, and Lauri Lepistö on the men’s side, and Oona Kettunen and Vilma Ryytty on the women’s field.

Korpela has seen the popularity of roller skiing competitions in Norway grow and hopes for the same culture in Finland as well and states:

“Roller skiing is the best training during summer. The long-distance race is great for building the base form for July.”
