Persson Questions Condition Before the Double Events In Italy
However, a cold has disrupted his training camp in Livigno, Italy, ahead of the Pro Tour this weekend.
“I have been lying on the couch instead of doing intervals,” Persson says.
Last year’s dominant Emil Persson got a top start in Orsa Grönklitt and gained even more respect from his competitors.
What do you think your competitors have been doing during the Christmas and New Year break?
“They have trained and worked on their own form to try to be stronger than I am.”
How was your training these weeks since Orsa Grönklitt?
“I have taken it very calmly. I did not think I had a great day and feeling in Orsa, but it went well anyway. We went to altitude a week ago, and then I got a little cold after three days. So since then, I have taken it very calmly.”
How do you feel now?
“I have been out training yesterday and today. It feels like it’s heading in the right direction, so it can probably be a start.
Do you think the cold will affect your performance this weekend?
“Yes, a little. I had planned to do some intervals this week, but it didn’t happen. I have had to lie on the couch instead. Hopefully, it feels better for the weekend.
And what do you think about two races in a row this weekend?
“You get tired after the first day and still have to recover for the next one. But I think it’s fun to push myself and test what the body can do. The second day was better than the first for me when we raced back-to-back races in Vålådalen last season.
The plan for Emil Persson this winter is to be on top form for Marcialonga and ahead of Vasaloppet.
“My plan is to be able to win Vasaloppet. I have had that in mind all summer and autumn,” he concludes.
Visma Ski Classics returns this weekend with the 62km Pustertaler Ski Marathon on Saturday and the 32km Prato Piazza Mountain Challenge on Sunday. You can read more about the races here.
