Teemu Virtanen and Susanna Ylinen’s 24-hour skiing World Record attempt, which started yesterday at the Lahti Stadium in Finland, ended early this evening. Both the men’s and women’s World Records were broken.

Teemu Virtanen broke the record set earlier by Hans Mäenpää 13 minutes before the time limit. The record distance held by Mäenpää was 472 kilometers and 7 meters.

Ylinen, on the other hand, achieved the old record of 375 kilometers and 564 meters just under an hour before the 24-hour time limit and broke the record previously held by Anni Angeria by a solid margin.

The 24-hour attempt finished at around 16:32 CET today. The official distance has yet to be confirmed.

The 24-hour skiing World Record attempt was broadcast on ISTV, with a live stream available to the international media. The broadcast also included 24 H Studio, where host Ari Sakari Tuukkanen interviewed guests in Finnish and English. Among the guests were top of the skiing world, local influencers, and people behind the attempt to make the World Record.

The 24-hour skiing World Record attempt was initially planned for January, but the cold conditions forced it to be moved to March 17. Once again, the date changed. The start date was then set for Monday, March 18, 2024.

Norwegian previous attempt

Norwegians have also tried to break the record. Daniel Strand from Alta was supposed to try to ski 475km in 24 hours during Easter in 2022. The experienced ultra-athlete failed and ended up in hospital.

On the other hand, Anders Aukland holds the World Record for the most kilometers covered in one session. In April 2021, Aukland skied 700 kilometers in just over 40 hours.
