The Kangaroo Hoppet is Cancelled

By Hanna Karlsson • 15.08.2024
The Kangaroo Hopppet, the first ever Australian Ski Classics Challengers event planned to take place in Falls Creek, Australia, on August 24th, 2024, has been cancelled due to abnormally warm weather and low snow conditions.

The 42km long Kangaroo Hoppet takes place annually in the beautiful landscape of  the Bogon High Plains in the Alpine National Park. Regrettably, the event had to be cancelled for 2024 due to the continuous warm weather and rapidly diminishing snow conditions.

The Local Organising Committee released a notice about the cancelation on their official website:

“Kangaroo Hoppet 2024 has been cancelled

It is with much sadness that we have to inform you that the 2024 Kangaroo Hoppet has been cancelled due to rapidly deteriorating snow conditions on the course, combined with a weather forecast of warm temperatures and rain in the next week.

While there is still good skiing in the Heathy Spur and Mt McKay/Pretty Valley  areas adjacent to Falls Creek, snow conditions on the lower trails in Sun Valley, the Dam Wall and along the Bogong High Plains Road means that it is not possible to host an event such as the Kangaroo Hoppet.

Entry fees will be refunded to the credit card used for your online entry.  Please contact the race office on info@hoppet.com.au if your entry was made in another way.”

Chief of race, Sandra Paul declared that the organising committee is “Devastated that due to snow coverage a suitable course could not be found.”

Allan Marsland, Chairman of the Kangaroo Hoppet mentioned that  “it is particularly disappointing for us, given it was to be our first year as a Ski Classics Challenger race. We are looking forward to welcoming the Ski Classics community to our 2025 event on the 4th Saturday of August, when the world comes to Falls Creek. ”
