Exclusive interview with Charlotte Kalla and Johan Esk for ProXCskiing members
Charlotte Kalla broke through to the world of traditional cross-country skiing in the first days of 2008. That’s when, through a series of solid competitions, she made it to the final climb of Alpe Cermis at the Tour de Ski. Once there, she caught Virpi Kuitunen, who started first and, with a kilometer to go, made the decisive move.
The victory in the Tour de Ski and the three gold medals at the World Championships and the Winter Olympics make the 35-year-old former professional athlete one of Sweden’s most successful cross-country skiers.
A year ago, she decided to retire from elite skiing, and this summer, she became a mother to Alvin.
Over the past year, she has also, together with Johan Esk, written the autobiography that is being released. The name of the book is “Skam den som ger sig.”
“Now that the book is about to be released, it feels like I’m preparing for the start of a season. I recognize the nervousness and anxiety. It has affected my mood, and it has spilled over into ‘ordinary life.’ Then I have had to think that this is just a book. But it is also a book about my life and my career. This a nice summary of my career, where all decisions have been made based on becoming as good a cross-country skier as possible. To fit all this between two covers has been a challenging thing to do. But I’m very proud of the result,” says Charlotte Kalla to Langd.se on her way to the book launch in Stockholm.
