The cross-country skiing World Championships 2025 in Trondheim, Norway, is over two months away, but four athletes are already named for the Swedish National Team.

Trondheim, Norway, will host the next winter season’s World Championships. The Opening Ceremony will be held on February 26, 2025. There will be 16 cross-country skiing competitions in 10 days, with the last race being the women’s cross-country skiing 50km mass start race in freestyle technique on March 9, 2025.

In a press release, the Swedish Ski Association has already named four athletes for the upcoming World Championships in Norway.

“Like two years ago, we choose to present some names to the World Championships squad already now before Christmas. The reason is that we want to give these skiers extra time to prepare for the World Championships and thus a calmness to be able to perform as well as possible when it comes to February,” says Swedish National Team manager Anders Byström.

Jonna Sundling, Ebba Andersson, Frida Karlsson, and Johanna Hagström have been selected to represent Sweden and the Swedish national team in the main traditional cross-country skiing event in the season 2024/2025.

“Those who are now selected are both reigning champions who thus have their own free places at the World Cup, but also active ones who have already performed at such a high level during the first period of the World Cup that they are a given in the World Championships squad,” says Anders Byström.

One name stands out:

“At the last championships, Johanna Hagström had to fight for her place right up to the final selection, but this time she has impressed so much that we see her as one of the five ladies who will compete in the sprint at the World Championships,” says Anders Byström.

The 26-year-old from Falköping has had a convincing start to the season with a win in the sprint in the World Cup premiere in Ruka, as well as a second place in Lillehammer. Which means that she has already gotten a World Championships spot.

“It was great to get the news – even though I might have been a little bit aware of it. But I was very happy about the conversation,” says Johanna Hagström.

“It is great to secure a place in the squad. Not least to be able to set up a training plan for the World Championships already now, where you don’t have to top your form in the same way before the World Cup to succeed in securing a World Championships place. Now it can instead be a completely different focus towards Trondheim,” she continued.
