The 32-year-old from Lillehammer has never felt better prepared for a Championships season. But there’s one thing he finds uncomfortable.

Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget is embarking on his 11th season at the World Cup level, coming off his best season yet. The Lillehammer Skiklub skier finished fifth overall in the World Cup standings and fourth in the distance standings—his career-best rankings. He stood on the World Cup podium 10 times and claimed three of his four career victories last season.

ProXCskiing.com.’s sister site Langrenn.com spoke with the reflective Norwegian national team veteran ahead of the season premiere in Beitostølen, where the home-soil World Championships in Trondheim stand out as the season’s highlight.

As someone who has been part of the national team for a decade, Nyenget is undeniably one of the most experienced athletes in the field. He shared details of a nearly flawless training build-up:

“I’ve never trained this well or managed to put in such solid work. So, the status is good—I’m excited for this season and can’t wait to pin a race bib to my chest. I feel like I still have more to give,” said Nyenget

Exam Season: Four Months of Racing

At the season premiere in Beitostølen, Nyenget will compete in both distance races: the 10km classic on Saturday and the 10km freestyle on Sunday. These will be critical races in the fight for one of the 12 spots on the Norwegian World Championships squad.

“The competition for spots on the Norwegian team is so fierce that you need to perform well from the start,” Nyenget said.

His strategy to secure a World Championships spot is clear:

“I hope to deliver some strong races before Christmas to get my foot in the door. Then, I’ll train some more and solidify my place with standout performances closer to the World Championships,” said Nyenget, who also plans to include the Tour de Ski in his schedule.

“My plan is to race quite a bit. The Tour de Ski counts for team selection, so I’ll be competing heavily until the selections are made.”

What distances are you most eager to race at the World Championships?

“I’d love to do them all, but on this team, making the cut is so tough. My training has focused mostly on the 10km classic and the 50km freestyle. I’m also hopeful to race in the relay, and I haven’t given up on my dream of the skiathlon. The only events I’ll leave to others are the sprint and sprint relay.”

Can we officially call you a veteran now?

“Yes… I don’t like it, but it’s fine.”
