Lahti makes history – 2029 World Championships confirmed
Next year’s World Championships will take place in Trondheim, Norway, and the 2027 Championships in Falun, Sweden, meaning the Nordic countries will host three consecutive World Championships.
Lahti is making history, and the city can rightfully be called a skiing city. The previous World Championships were held in 2017 and were successful with the audience, but the Finnish Ski Association faced financial difficulties after the event. At the beginning of June, the Ski Association requested additional time to decide on the event, after which the organizing parties—the Ski Association, the city of Lahti, and the Lahti Ski Club – agreed to share the event’s costs.
On Thursday, at the International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS) board meeting, it was confirmed that Lahti will host the 2029 Championships – read more here.
“We are pleased that the organizational agreement has now been signed, and we can start seriously preparing for the World Championships, which are less than five years away. I am also convinced that the cooperation between the Ski Association, the city of Lahti, and the Lahti Ski Club will deepen further, and we will organize a successful event where the athletes are the main focus,” said Ski Association Chairman Sirpa Korkatti in a statement.
The economic impact of the World Championships on the region is estimated to be over 40 million euros, and the event will once again bring visibility to Lahti and strengthen its position as one of the world’s most well-known ski centers.
“The event has immense significance for Finnish sports. We can once again offer viewers unique experiences at the world’s best Nordic sports stadium, with an experienced event organization handling the implementation. I am particularly pleased that our athletes will once again have the opportunity to experience the magic of a home competition and hopefully gain additional motivation from it,” Korkatti commented in the statement.
