Women’s 10km Race F – Preview

The women’s 10km freestyle race is one of the most exciting cross-country skiing competitions to watch. This year, the event will take place at the Planica World Championships on Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Here’s what you need to know about the top contenders.

Sweden has a strong team for this event, with Frida Karlsson and Ebba Andersson finishing 2nd and 3rd at the 2021 World Championships. In 2015, Charlotte Kalla became the first Swedish woman to win this event at the World Championships.

Andersson has been in top form, winning the last two 10km freestyle events in the World Cup, and she also won the Junior World Title in the 10km freestyle in 2016 and a 10km classic style and 15km freestyle at the Under 23 World Championships in 2020.

Jessica Diggins of the USA has been consistently strong in this event, finishing on the podium in three of the four 10km freestyle events this World Cup season. She won in Lillehammer, was third in Les Rousses, and came second in Toblach. Diggins could claim her second World Championships medal in the 10km freestyle after winning silver in 2015. The USA has won only one world title in any cross-country event, with Diggins and Kikkan Randall winning gold in the women’s team sprint in 2013.

Other Contenders

Ingvild Flugstad Østberg of Norway won bronze in the 10km classic style at the World Championships in 2019. Tiril Udnes Weng has never finished on the podium of a 10km freestyle event, but she claimed three medals at the Junior and Under 23 World Championships.

Delphine Claudel won the 10km freestyle World Cup in Val di Fiemme this season and finished second in Les Rousses. Kerttu Niskanen or Krista Pärmäkoski could win the second World Championships medal for Finland in the 10km freestyle event after a silver medal for Marjo Matikainen in 1989.

Switzerland won one medal in a women’s distance event, a bronze for Evi Kratzer in the 5km classic style in 1987. Germany has never won a medal in the women’s 10km freestyle at world championships, but East Germany’s Barbara Petzold took silver in the 10km classic style in 1974.

In conclusion, the women’s 10km freestyle race at the Planica World Championships promises to be thrilling, with top athletes from around the world vying for the top spot on the podium.

Planica, Slovenia, is the place for this winter season’s World Championships, with ten competitions in 12 days and the last race being the men’s cross-country skiing 50km mass start race on March 5, 2023.
