Swedes warn Johaug: “The level is higher now”

The Swedish rivals celebrate Johaug’s comeback but warn the former traditional cross-country skiing star that they plan to give her a more demanding challenge now.

When Langrenn.com met Swedish Johaug rivals Ebba Andersson and Frida Karlsson last spring, they clearly said they would love to have the traditional cross-country skiing queen back and look forward to competing with her again. They believe they will give Therese Johaug an even tougher fight now.

How do you see a duel with Therese at next year’s World Championships?

“She is very welcome back. I look forward to a duel,” says Karlsson to Langrenn.com.

Karlsson first beat Johaug in the 30km race at Holmenkollen in March 2020. She then defeated Johaug in the 10km classic at the World Cup opener in November 2021 and the 10km freestyle at the World Cup in Lillehammer in December 2021. Last winter, Karlsson won the 50km at Holmenkollen in dominant style.

“It would really be an old benchmark to get back (if Johaug makes a comeback). I think the level is higher now, both in terms of dimension and top competitors, but we know what she can do since she was active. So, it would be really cool to see,” says Karlsson.

Ebba Andersson, the Swede who became the star of the 2023 Ski World Championships in Planica, the first championship after Therese retired, agrees.

Would you like to face Johaug at the World Championships in Trondheim?

“Yes, who wouldn’t want that?”

Johaug: “I hope I can motivate them”

The joy is mutual. During Wednesday’s press conference, where Therese Johaug announced her comeback, the 36-year-old shared that she feels many want her back.

“I’ve seen that many have wanted me to make a comeback. At least those on the other side, the Swedish girls. So, I hope it can motivate them a bit,” says the Norwegian traditional cross-country skier.
