World Cup Moved From Milan to Livigno
In a press release today, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) announced that, in conjunction with the Italian Ski Federation (FISI), it decided to move the sprint World Cup from Milan to the high altitude of Livigno.
“Of course, we are looking to have as few changes to the original calendar program as possible. Nevertheless, we are aware of the challenges organizers are facing these days with global issues affecting their events. That is why we remain in constant exchange and need to be able to react on time. With Livigno, FISI has presented a great alternative for the Sprint weekend in January, and we are looking forward to get the final preparations underway,” says Michal Lamplot, FIS Cross-Country Race Director, in the press release.
Updated World Cup Calendar For The 2022/2023 Season
Unsustainable
The World Cup stage in Milan has now been officially canceled.
The reason is the sky-high electricity prices. Producing enough snow to organize ski races in Milan’s center would require enormous energy.
“It is difficult to imagine how we would manage the expenses for snow production with the current electricity prices. We also must consider the environment and the vast amounts of water we need. In this sense, this event is not sustainable, neither financially nor in terms of the environment,” says the organizer to Fondo Italia.
By canceling the World Cup in Milan, the organizer also avoids potential conflicts with environmentalists.
